Barrier islands like Stone Harbor are critical flyover areas for a wide array of migratory birds. Erosion during the 1980's destroyed hundreds of acres of sensitive habitat at Stone Harbor Point.
In an effort to restore the beaches of Stone Harbor, the US Army Corps of Engineers, NJDEP and the Boroughs of Stone Harbor and Avalon formed a joint partnership to embark on a 50-year beach nourishment project. The projected proceeded on two conditions: Stone Harbor Point would be deed restricted to prevent further development, and the terminal groin would be notched to improve sand bypass to Stone Harbor Point.
The project has been a remarkable success, restoring over 300 acres of natural habitat and successfully defending billions in real estate and public infrastructure from destruction during Hurricane Sandy and other coastal storms.
