Avalon: Bay Park Marina Living Shoreline
ACC Member Avalon, New Jersey, recently completed the renovation of its Bay Park Marina, with the addition of a community-led living shoreline project. Before the project, Bay Park Marina and the surrounding region experienced consistent flooding and eroding shorelines that impacted public safety and accessibility. The project includes 750 feet of vegetated shoreline that not only bolsters resilience but enhances habitat for pollinators, sea turtles, oysters, and other native species.
A $1 million grant from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation supported the work of the Borough, allowing them to:
- Remove 450 ft. of uninhabitable concrete
- Create over 750 ft. of vegetated shoreline
- Add a sandy turtle nesting area & pollinator meadow
- Restore oyster reefs and native species
- Decrease sunny day floods by 20 days
- Reduce terrapin road deaths by over 50%
