A recent study highlighted by The Washington Post reveals that coastal flooding in North Carolina communities like Beaufort, Carolina Beach, and Sea Level occurs far more often than federal tide gauges indicate, with researchers documenting up to 128 flood days in a single year. By installing sensors in stormwater drains and cameras above, the study uncovered that many floods happen on sunny days, driven by rising sea levels, subsiding land, and outdated infrastructure. These findings, published in Communications Earth & Environment, underscore the urgent need for better flood monitoring and adaptive infrastructure to address the escalating impacts of climate change in coastal regions. The American Coastal Coalition encourages members to stay informed and advocate for sustainable solutions to protect our coastal communities.
