The American Coastal Coalition is pleased to welcome our newest member, Stafford Township, New Jersey!
Stafford has over 8 miles of coastline along Barnegat Bay, with lagoons, canals, marshes, and residential waterfront covering much of the Township. It serves as the connection between the mainland and Long Beach Island.
The Township is committed to protecting the community, natural resources, and quality of life through multiple resiliency initiatives:
- The longterm restoration and maintenance of Stafford lagoons utilizes sewer maintenance, stormwater management, and dredging to improve water quality, flow, and navigation. The dredged material is also beneficially reused to support nearby marsh restoration, further improving water quality and community resiliency.
- Extensive tidal and flood monitoring supports longterm emergency preparedness and protects key evacuation routes for Stafford, as well as the six municipalities of Long Beach Island (including ACC member, Long Beach Township!)
- The Mud City Climate Resilience and Ecological Enhancement Study supports its most vulnerable coastal neighborhood in adapting and strengthening resiliency to increasing coastal challenges.
Stafford Township is the first coastal community without a direct oceanfront beach to join the ACC, highlighting the coalition’s dedication to representing the diverse needs of all coastal communities. We are excited to expand our coalition’s collective voice and work with Stafford Township to promote their needs at the federal level.
Welcome, Stafford Township!
