Representative Mike Levin, an American Coastal Coalition Champion from California’s 49th Congressional district, recently submitted a recognition of International Surfing Day to be included in the Congressional Record’s Extensions of Remarks.

While recognizing International Surfing Day, which falls on the third Saturday in June, Levin highlights the importance of defending Southern California beaches and the Nation’s coastlines. Representative Levin writes, “Keeping our beaches clean, safe, and accessible is a moral obligation and an economic imperative…. I urge this body to invest in their protection, celebrate their wonder, and safeguard them for every American—today and for generations to come."

As shoreline erosion is intensified by climate change-induced sea level rise and powerful storms, coastal infrastructure and the communities close the the shore are at risk. Congressman Levin states “we must meet this challenge head-on with bold investments in coastal resilience, science-based shoreline management, and meaningful action to address the root causes of climate change.”

Representative Levin submitted the Congressional Record Insert after learning of the American Coastal Coalition’s #YEStoBeaches advocacy campaign, urging federal investment in America’s beaches. The ACC is proud to have Representative Levin as an ACC Champion and a continued advocate for America’s coastlines.

“For so many of us in the district, surfing isn’t just a sport. It’s a way of life passed down through generations, woven into the identity of every coastal community here.”
